Maize Farming Tips for Zambia

  • Plant early: The best time to plant is November to December when rains start. Late planting reduces yield.
  • Correct spacing: Use 75cm between rows and 25cm between plants. This gives each plant enough room and sunlight.
  • Apply basal fertilizer at planting: Use D-Compound or Compound D (about 1 teaspoon per hole). This feeds roots early.
  • Top dress at knee height: Apply Urea or CAN when maize is about 30–45cm tall. Place it 5–10cm from the stem.
  • Control weeds early: Weed twice — at 3 weeks and again at 6 weeks after planting. Weeds steal nutrients and water.
  • Use hybrid seed: Hybrid varieties like SC403, SC419, or DKC8053 give higher yields than local varieties.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much seed do I need per hectare?
For hybrid maize, use about 25 kg of seed per hectare. For OPV (open-pollinated varieties), you may use 20–25 kg/ha. This gives approximately 50,000 plants per hectare when using 75cm × 25cm spacing.
How many fertilizer bags are needed for maize per hectare?
A standard recommendation in Zambia is 3 bags of basal fertilizer (D-Compound) and 3 bags of top dressing (Urea or CAN) per hectare. This equals about 150 kg of each per hectare. Your actual needs depend on your soil type.
What is the average maize yield in Zambia?
The national average is around 2–3 tonnes per hectare for smallholder farmers. With good hybrid seed, proper fertilizer, and timely planting, yields of 5–8 tonnes per hectare are achievable.
