This calculator estimates Airtel Money charges in Zambia for sending money to another Airtel Money user, sending across networks, withdrawing cash at an agent, and transferring to a bank account. It also applies the government Mobile Money Transaction Levy where it’s due. The Government Mobile Money Levy
Zambia introduced a Mobile Money Transaction Levy in January 2025, and the rates were doubled from 1 January 2026 under an amendment act. The levy applies to person-to-person sends across all providers — Airtel, MTN, Zamtel, and ZedMobile — but it is not charged on withdrawals or bank transfers.

How Airtel’s Fee Bands Work
Airtel charges fixed fees within set amount bands rather than a flat percentage. Deposits are free across all amounts, while sends, withdrawals, and bank transfers each have their own separate fee table. The government levy uses its own band thresholds, which line up with Airtel’s send bands, but not with the withdrawal or bank transfer bands.

Send (Cross-Network): Total Cost = Airtel Cross-Network Fee + Govt Levy
Withdrawal: Total Cost = Airtel Withdrawal Fee (no levy)
Bank Transfer: Total Cost = Airtel Bank Transfer Fee (no levy)
Worked Example
Airtel send fee (K1,000.01–K3,000 band): K2.00
Government levy (K1,000.01–K3,000 band): K4.00
Total cost = K6.00 — recipient still receives the full K1,500
Sending the same K1,500 cross-network to MTN or Zamtel would cost K19.20 in Airtel fees alone, plus the same K4.00 levy.
Tips to Reduce Mobile Money Costs
- Ask people you send money to regularly to register for Airtel Money, since same-network transfers cost a fraction of cross-network ones
- For amounts above K5,000, compare a cross-network send against a wallet-to-bank transfer — the bank route often works out cheaper since it carries no government levy
- Send larger amounts less often rather than several small ones, since fee bands are fixed rather than percentage-based

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the recipient pay any fee?
No. The recipient receives the full amount sent. All fees and the government levy are deducted from the sender’s wallet balance.
Is the levy charged on withdrawals or bank transfers?
No. The Mobile Money Transaction Levy only applies to person-to-person send transactions, whether same-network or cross-network. Withdrawals, deposits, and bank transfers are exempt from the levy, though Airtel’s own service fee still applies where one exists.
What is the maximum I can send on Airtel Money?
Airtel Money’s published fee schedule covers transactions up to K10,000 per transaction. Daily and monthly limits depend on your account verification level, so check with Airtel for your specific tier.
Why is cross-network sending so much more expensive?
Sending to a wallet on another network involves an interoperability settlement process between the two mobile money platforms, which carries higher handling costs than crediting a wallet on the same network — and that’s reflected in the fee.
