The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) sets a national uniform pump price for petrol, diesel, kerosene, and Jet A-1 fuel every month, based on international oil prices and the Kwacha exchange rate. How Fuel Consumption Affects Cost
Fuel consumption is usually given in kilometres per litre (km/L) for Zambian drivers, though some manuals quote litres per 100km. A smaller, well-maintained sedan might do 12–15 km/L, while a loaded pickup or SUV on rough roads might only manage 6–8 km/L. The lower your km/L figure, the more litres — and money — a trip will cost.
Calculation Formula
Total Cost = Litres Needed × Price per Litre
Cost per Km = Total Cost ÷ Distance
Worked Example
Litres needed: 120 ÷ 10 = 12 litres
Total cost: 12 × K27.15 = K325.80
Cost per kilometre = K2.72

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my vehicle’s fuel consumption?
Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s km/L or L/100km rating, or calculate it yourself: fill the tank completely, note the odometer reading, drive normally until you need to refuel, then divide the distance covered by the litres used to refill.
Does this calculator include tolls or other trip costs?
No. This calculator estimates fuel cost only. Toll fees, parking, and other trip expenses are not included and should be budgeted separately.
Why is my actual fuel cost higher than the estimate?
Real-world consumption is affected by traffic congestion, hilly terrain, vehicle load, tyre condition, air conditioning use, and driving style, all of which can push actual consumption below the manufacturer-rated figure used in the calculation.
Are these prices the same across all of Zambia?
The ERB sets a national uniform pump price, so the official rate is the same across the country. In practice, some remote filling stations may charge slightly more due to local transport and distribution costs.
