1. University GPA Calculation

At universities like UNZA, CBU, or MU, each course has credit hours. A 6-credit course affects your GPA more than a 3-credit course. Enter the grade point for each course (e.g., A=5, B=4) and use the credit hours as the weight.

Example: Math (Grade 5.0, 6 credits), English (Grade 4.0, 3 credits), Physics (Grade 3.0, 4 credits)
GPA = (5×6 + 4×3 + 3×4) ÷ (6+3+4) = (30 + 12 + 12) ÷ 13 = 4.15

2. Final Course Grade

Most Zambian courses use weighted assessments: coursework (20%), mid-terms (20%), and final exam (60%). Enter each component’s score and its percentage weight to see your final grade.

3. Investment Portfolio Returns

If you invest in multiple assets (stocks, bonds, property), each with different allocations and returns, the weighted average gives you your true overall portfolio return.

The Weighted Average Formula

A weighted average multiplies each value by its corresponding weight, adds up all those products, and then divides by the total of the weights.

Formula:

Weighted Average = (V₁×W₁ + V₂×W₂ + V₃×W₃ + …) ÷ (W₁ + W₂ + W₃ + …)

Where:
• V = Value (the number you’re averaging)
• W = Weight (the importance of that value)

Step-by-Step Example

Let’s calculate a student’s final grade with three components:

  1. Coursework: Score = 70%, Weight = 20%
  2. Mid-term: Score = 65%, Weight = 30%
  3. Final Exam: Score = 80%, Weight = 50%

Step 1: Multiply each score by its weight (as a decimal):

  • 70 × 0.20 = 14
  • 65 × 0.30 = 19.5
  • 80 × 0.50 = 40

Step 2: Add the results: 14 + 19.5 + 40 = 73.5

Step 3: The final grade is 73.5% (a solid B)

Why Not Use a Simple Average?

A simple average treats all values equally. But in real life, not everything is equally important. A final exam worth 60% of your grade should have more influence than a homework assignment worth 5%. The weighted average reflects this reality.

Raw Weights vs Percentages

  • Percentages: Weights must add up to 100%. Easier to understand. (e.g., 20% + 30% + 50% = 100%)
  • Raw Weights: Can be any numbers. The calculator normalizes them automatically. Useful for credit hours, shares, or counts. (e.g., 3 credits + 4 credits + 6 credits = 13 total)

What is the difference between weighted average and simple average?

A simple average adds all values and divides by the count. A weighted average multiplies each value by its importance (weight) before averaging. If all weights are equal, the weighted average equals the simple average.

What if my weights don’t add up to 100%?

No problem! If you select “Raw Weights” mode, the calculator automatically normalizes them. For example, weights of 3, 4, and 6 (total 13) will be treated as 3/13, 4/13, and 6/13 respectively.

Can I use negative values or weights?

Yes, the calculator supports negative values (useful for losses in investments). However, weights should always be positive — a negative weight doesn’t make logical sense.
