About This Calculator
This ZESCO units calculator estimates the cost of prepaid electricity using the residential progressive tariff structure approved by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB). Because ZESCO charges in increasing price bands as your monthly consumption rises, the cost per unit is not fixed — buying more units pushes part of your purchase into higher-priced bands. This is the same kind of progressive structure used in our PAYE Calculator, where income is taxed band by band rather than at a single flat rate.
Current ZESCO Residential Tariff Bands
ZESCO uses a four-tier progressive block tariff for residential prepaid customers. The first 100 units each month are charged at the lowest “lifeline” rate to protect low-consumption households, with each subsequent band priced higher.

How the Progressive Tariff Works
Each band only applies to the units that fall within its range — not your entire monthly consumption. For example, if you buy 250 units, the first 100 units are charged at the Band 1 rate, the next 100 units at the Band 2 rate, and the remaining 50 units at the Band 3 rate.

Band 1: 100 units × K0.35 = K35.00
Band 2: 100 units × K1.00 = K100.00

Total cost = K256.00 for 250 units (average K1.02/unit)
Tips to Manage Your ZESCO Bill
- Spread purchases across the month rather than buying all your units at once, since each new token purchase restarts band calculation within the same monthly cycle on most prepaid meters
- Reduce consumption from heavy appliances like electric stoves, geysers, and iron boxes during peak hours to avoid crossing into higher bands
- Track your monthly usage pattern so you can anticipate when you’ll move from Band 2 into the more expensive Band 3 or Band 4 rates

Frequently Asked Questions
Do the tariff bands reset every month?
Yes. ZESCO’s progressive bands are calculated based on cumulative consumption within each calendar month, then reset for the next billing cycle.
Are commercial and residential customers charged the same rates?
No. Commercial, industrial, and other customer categories are billed under separate tariff schedules approved by the ERB, which differ from the residential prepaid rates used in this calculator.
Does this calculator include VAT or other charges?
No. This calculator estimates the energy cost based on the published per-unit tariff bands only. Your actual token purchase may include additional levies, metering fees, or rounding applied by ZESCO’s vending system.
Why do my units finish faster than they used to?
If your household consumption has increased — for example, due to more stable power supply allowing greater appliance use — more of your monthly usage falls into the higher-priced bands (Band 3 and Band 4), which reduces the total number of units a fixed amount of money can buy compared to lower consumption months.
Is this calculator official?
