📖 Step-by-Step Guide
How to Use This Calculator
Get your full MTN MoMo fee breakdown in under 30 seconds.
1

Pick Your Transaction Type

Choose from three tabs: Send Money (transfer to another person), Withdraw Cash (get cash from an agent or bank), or Agent Deposit (load money into your MoMo wallet). Each type has different fee rules under Zambia’s 2026 tariff structure.

2

Enter the Amount in Kwacha (K)

Type the exact Zambian Kwacha (ZMW) amount you wish to transfer, withdraw, or deposit. Be as precise as possible — fees in Zambia are calculated per transaction band, so even small differences can change which tier applies.

3

Choose Recipient Type & Levy Option

For sending money, select whether you’re sending to an MTN MoMo user, another network, or an unregistered user. You can also toggle whether to include the Government Mobile Money Transaction Levy — this levy is mandatory on person-to-person transfers since January 2025.

4

Tap “Calculate Fee”

Press the green Calculate button. The result box will instantly appear showing a full breakdown: MTN service fee, government levy amount, recipient amount, and total deducted from your wallet. All figures are in Zambian Kwacha (K).

5

Review Your Breakdown and Plan Accordingly

Check the breakdown carefully. If you want the recipient to receive a specific amount, you may need to send slightly more to cover fees. You can recalculate as many times as needed — the tool is completely free and works on any device including basic smartphones.

ℹ️ About MTN MoMo Zambia

What Is MTN MoMo in Zambia?

MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) is one of the leading mobile financial services in Zambia, operating under MTN Mobile Money (Zambia) Limited. It allows any person with an MTN SIM card and a valid NRC (National Registration Card) or passport to open a mobile wallet — completely without a bank account. The service is accessible via USSD by dialing *303#, through the MTN MoMo mobile app, or at any authorized MTN MoMo agent across the country.

MTN MoMo has become an essential financial tool for millions of Zambians — enabling them to pay bills (ZESCO electricity, DStv, water), buy airtime, receive salaries and social cash transfers, send money to family across provinces, and even access micro-loans and savings products. It is especially vital in rural communities where bank branches are scarce or non-existent.

Understanding the 2026 Fee Structure

Zambia’s MTN MoMo fee structure in 2026 has two main components that users must understand:

  • MTN Service Fee: Domestic person-to-person (P2P) transfers are FREE within the MTN network. Withdrawals cost a flat K3 per transaction at an agent. Bank transfers attract slightly higher fees.
  • Government Levy (ZRA): Since January 2025, Zambia imposes a sliding-scale levy on all mobile money transfers. The levy was doubled in January 2026 under the Mobile Money Transaction Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025, now ranging from 0.08% to 0.42% of the transfer value. It is collected by operators on behalf of the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and is NOT applied to withdrawals.

This dual structure means that even though MTN P2P transfers are “free,” senders still pay the government levy. Understanding both components is critical for budgeting accurately — which is exactly what this calculator helps you do.

Who Pays What?

For sending money, the sender pays the MTN service fee (if any) plus the government levy. The recipient always receives the full amount stated. For withdrawals, the fee (K3) is deducted from the amount withdrawn — so the cash you receive is slightly less than your wallet balance. For deposits, there are no charges — loading your MoMo wallet is completely free.

❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are MTN MoMo transfers free in Zambia?
MTN-to-MTN person-to-person transfers are free of MTN’s own service fee in Zambia. However, the Government Mobile Money Transaction Levy still applies. This levy, collected by MTN on behalf of ZRA, ranges from 0.08% to 0.42% depending on your transaction amount. So while there is no MTN charge, you still pay a small government levy on every transfer.
How much does it cost to withdraw from MTN MoMo in Zambia?
Withdrawing cash at an MTN MoMo agent costs a flat fee of K3.00 per transaction, regardless of the amount withdrawn. The government levy does NOT apply to withdrawals — only to person-to-person transfers. So if you withdraw K500, you receive K497 in cash.
What is the Zambia Mobile Money Transaction Levy?
It is a government tax introduced under the Mobile Money Transaction Levy Act No. 25 of 2024, effective January 2025. It applies a sliding-scale percentage on all P2P mobile money transfers. In January 2026, the rates were doubled under an Amendment Act. The levy is paid by the sender, collected by the mobile money provider, and remitted to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).
Is depositing money into my MTN MoMo wallet free?
Yes! Loading your MTN MoMo wallet through an agent (cash-in) is completely free. No MTN fee and no government levy applies to deposits. This makes it cost-free to fund your wallet — only outgoing transfers and withdrawals incur charges.
Who pays when I send to an unregistered MTN number?
When you send money to a number not registered on MoMo, the sender pays the transfer cost (MTN fee + levy). The recipient receives an SMS notification and can withdraw the cash for free at any MTN MoMo agent — they are not charged a withdrawal fee for these transactions.
What documents do I need to register for MTN MoMo Zambia?
Zambian citizens need a valid National Registration Card (NRC). Foreign nationals must present a Passport or other regulator-approved ID such as a Refugee ID. Corporate accounts require business registration documents including a Certificate of Incorporation.
Is this calculator official or connected to MTN Zambia?
No. This is an independent third-party tool built to help Zambian MTN MoMo users estimate fees quickly and accurately. It is not affiliated with MTN Zambia, MTN Group, or any government authority. Always verify final charges in the official MTN MoMo app or by calling MTN Zambia Customer Care on 100 (free from MTN).
