About Concrete Mix Ratios in Zambia

In Zambian construction, the strength and durability of concrete depend heavily on the mix ratio—the proportion of cement, sand, and aggregates (stone). The most common mix for general domestic construction (slabs, foundations, paths) is the 1:2:4 ratio. This means 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 4 parts stone. For plastering, a weaker mix of 1:4 (1 part cement to 4 parts sand) is typically used to prevent cracking. For bricklaying mortar, a 1:5 or 1:6 ratio is standard. Using the correct ratio ensures structural integrity while optimizing material costs. Always use clean, sharp sand and quality aggregates from reputable suppliers.

Standard Cement Bag Size

In Zambia, cement is predominantly sold in 50kg bags. Major brands include Lafarge (Holcim), Dangote, and Chilanga Cement. One 50kg bag of cement has a volume of approximately 0.035 cubic meters.
