How Words Per Minute Is Measured
Words per minute (WPM) is simply the number of words processed divided by the time taken in minutes. For reading speed, this means counting every word read during a timed passage. For typing speed, it usually means counting words typed correctly during a fixed time test, often with a small penalty for errors in formal typing tests.
Calculation Formula
Reading/Speaking Time (minutes) = Number of Words ÷ Speed (WPM)
Worked Example
Time in minutes: 2 + (30 ÷ 60) = 2.5 minutes
WPM: 500 ÷ 2.5 = 200 WPM
Estimating time for a 1,500-word speech at 130 WPM:
Time: 1,500 ÷ 130 = 11.5 minutes
Tips to Improve Reading and Typing Speed
- Practise reading without sub-vocalising every word in your head, since this naturally caps speed at speaking pace
- For presentations, time yourself reading your script aloud rather than assuming a generic average, since pacing varies by speaker
- When typing, focus on accuracy before speed; correcting frequent errors usually costs more time than typing a little slower but cleanly
- Break long documents into sections and time yourself on a sample to get a more realistic full-document estimate

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good reading speed?
Most adults read comfortably at 200–250 words per minute with good comprehension. Speeds well above this, often achieved through skimming techniques, typically come with reduced comprehension and retention of detail.
Why is my speaking pace slower than my reading pace?
Speaking involves physically producing each word, pausing for emphasis, and breathing, all of which take longer than silently scanning text with your eyes. A natural presentation pace of 120–150 WPM is normal and recommended for audience comprehension.
Does this calculator check typing accuracy?
No. This calculator only measures raw speed based on words and time entered. It does not check whether typed text matches a target passage or penalise for errors, unlike dedicated typing tests.
