1. Never Let Fertilizer Touch the Seed

When applying basal fertilizer (D-Compound), place it in the furrow and cover it with a thin layer of soil before dropping the seed. Direct contact causes “salt burn” and will kill the germinating seedling.

2. Timing is Everything for Top Dressing

Apply Urea 3 to 4 weeks after crop emergence, when the maize is about knee-high. Crucial: Only apply Urea when rain is forecasted, or incorporate it lightly into moist soil. Applying Urea to dry, hot soil causes nitrogen to volatilize (turn into gas) and escape into the air, wasting your money.

3. Test Your Soil for Lime

Most Zambian soils (especially in the Copperbelt, Central, and Southern provinces) are acidic (pH < 5.5). Acidic soil "locks up" fertilizer, meaning your crops can't absorb the D-Compound you paid for. Applying 2–4 tonnes of agricultural lime per hectare a season before planting can double your fertilizer efficiency.

4. Calibrate Your Planting

Don’t guess. Use a calibrated planter or a measured cup (e.g., a 250ml cup holds roughly 200g of D-Compound) to ensure consistent application across the entire field. Uneven application leads to uneven crop maturity.

Safety Warning: Always wear gloves and a mask when handling fertilizer. Store bags on wooden pallets in a dry, well-ventilated shed, never directly on the ground, to prevent caking and moisture absorption.

Understanding Fertilizer Grades in Zambia

Choosing the right fertilizer depends on what your soil lacks. Fertilizer bags display three numbers (e.g., 10-20-10), representing the percentage of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).

  • D-Compound (10-20-10): The most common basal fertilizer in Zambia. High in Phosphorus, which is critical for early root development and flowering. Suitable for almost all crops.
  • Urea (46-0-0): A highly concentrated nitrogen source used exclusively for top-dressing to promote rapid vegetative (leaf and stem) growth.
  • CAN (Calcium Ammonium Nitrate): An alternative to Urea. It contains less nitrogen (27%) but also provides calcium, making it safer for top-dressing and less prone to volatilization in acidic soils.
  • LSP (Single Super Phosphate): Often preferred over D-Compound for legumes (soybeans, groundnuts) because it provides phosphorus and sulfur without excess nitrogen, which can inhibit nitrogen fixation in legumes.
